AURA

Aura sits up straight, shocked that Hayze has stormed out. She goes to stand, but Jewel beats her to it.

“I’ll go after him,” Jewel says.

“No,” Aura snaps, then realizes how harsh she sounded. “Thanks, but I’ll go.”

“For a boy from Water, he’s quite hot-headed,” Skylus mumbles.

“We apologize, Cyclonis,” Atmos says, shifting uncomfortably on his purple cushion. “I’m ashamed that one of us has disrespected you by walking out.”

Cyclonis runs his bony fingers down his long, gray beard. “That’s interesting, Atmos.”

Atmos’s cheeks flush. “I’m sorry, but I’m not sure what you mean.”

“You said Hayze was ‘one of us’,” Cyclonis explains. “Yet you’re from Air. He’s from Water. How is it that you’re on the same side?”

Aura hesitates, curious to hear his response before she leaves.

The color in Atmos’s cheeks deepens to match his robes as he searches for the correct answer to his esteemed leader’s question. It’s like he believes Cyclonis will send a tornado to pick him up and carry him into the clouds if he gets it wrong. Which given the circumstances, wouldn’t be all that far-fetched.

“Things are different out here,” Aura says, taking pity on Atmos. “We’re not a whole that’s been carved into four. We’re four pieces of a puzzle that fit together to make a whole.”

Cyclonis shifts his steely gaze to Aura. “Such clever words, yet you completely failed to bring down the feather by dampening it with water.”

Now Aura’s the one to feel heat racing to her cheeks. Because it’s true. Neither she nor Hayze had succeeded in Cyclonis’s task. The thought of Hayze has her walking toward the door. She needs to find him before he gets too far away.

“Aura,” Skylus shouts, her voice full of disbelief. “Cyclonis was talking to you!”

Aura’s pretty sure he was reprimanding her, not talking to her, but she holds her tongue. Now she knows for certain Elemental powers are real, she wants to learn how to harness them. It’s the only way she’s going to get home. And Cyclonis said he’d teach her.

“I’ll be back in a moment.” She smiles sweetly at Cyclonis. “With Hayze. Please excuse me.”

He nods his approval and she steps outside, blinking in the daylight as she scans the terrain, wondering which pile of rocks Hayze is hiding behind.

“Hayze!” she calls, not really expecting him to answer. “Where are you?”

Her words bounce off the harsh landscape before being swept away by the breeze.

“I’m not going to give up,” she shouts as she circles the formations. “I’ll keep looking until I find you. We could save a lot of time if you just tell me where you are.”

There’s no reply other than the constant whistling of the wind along with the whirling of the pinwheels.

She rounds a corner and sees a scrap of purple cloth sticking out from behind a boulder. Smiling, she draws in a breath of relief that Hayze hasn’t gone far. Not bothering to quieten her footsteps, she approaches and sits on the dusty ground just around the corner from him, leaning on the smooth surface of the rock.
